Senses Esprit (SE) – Revitalise the Sensory

Apex Harmony Lodge believes that People with Dementia (PwDs) have the right to enjoy the highest possible quality of life and quality of care by being engaged in meaningful relationships which are based on integrity, respect, perseverance, passion, devotion and excellent care.

Senses Esprit ( SE ) is an initiative in Apex Harmony Lodge which aims at enabling and engaging PwDs in multisensory activities that involves visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular, olfactory, proprioception and gustatory to awaken their senses and open up opportunity for purposeful physical and social interaction. SE facilitates PwDs’ ability to relive past memory, build cathartic relationship, unlock potential and relate again with the world they once thrive in.

Sensory stimulation therapy enables and empowers PWDs in meaningful engagement using everyday objects to reinvigorate one or more of their senses with the goal to evoke positive feelings. This is important to the elderly who are susceptible to sensory decline due to senescence and/or medical conditions. Sensory stimulation is foundational to awaken senses of the elderly enabling maximum occupational performance in the various daily activities such as art-making, daily exercise, activities of daily living and social activities that PWDs are engaged in.

The SE initiative has benefited residents at moderate and severe stages of dementia immensely, particularly residents in the Tender Loving Care (TLC) Home.   Central to programmes in SE initiative is person-centered care where each resident’s preferences, needs and choice is considered to bring enjoyment and help them feel and find meaning and in turn, improve their well-being.

Below are some of these programmes under the SE Initiative developed to help residents build a connection to everyday life and enjoy social interaction?

1.    Music Program with collaboration from UWCSEA

This initiative brings together students and residents who echoes each other personal journey using music as the medium. Each piece of music is carefully selected to help residents connect and recollect to their past experiences which in turn help to bring residents back to a time they remember fondly.

2. Sound of Beamz

This program unlocks residents’ creative expression through music interaction made easier via an innovative tool named Beamz.
