Flourishing in an Enabling Environment

Read how Mr Amdan is meaningfully engaged at the Lodge through the environmental design

Mr Amdan has held various positions previously, including being a Taekwondo instructor, serving in the police force, and even a bodyguard. He was highly independent but it took him some time to settle into the Lodge. Initially, he struggled with aggressive tendencies when his needs were not met in a timely manner. With time, he has come to embrace a new lifestyle at the Lodge.

Meaningful Participation

Mr Amdan enjoys a diverse range of individual and group activities and they were carefully selected by his Living Well Plan Ambassador to meet his aspirations and interests, as well as provide a dignified level of challenge. Specifically, he is provided opportunities to meet his level of transcendence. These include household activities like folding clothes, setting up the tables and cleaning up after meals. Mr Amdan also assists staff in pushing residents on wheelchairs around the Home and to the Garden. He is always ready to lend his helping hands!

Enabling Environment

 The design of the environment plays a big part in enabling Mr Amdan in his daily life too.

In Tulip Home, the environmental vision is “A Countryside Village”. A unique and interactive kampung mural outside the Home acts as a visual cue for way finding. The mural was personally picked by Mr Amdan and other residents. Through this, we provide residents with opportunities for autonomy and respect. Most importantly, it makes the place feel closer to home. Apart from the aesthetic design, there are environmental features that empower residents like Mr Amdan to maintain to independence in the Home as much as possible. Some examples include adequate lighting, visual contrast, and easily recognizable features.

Another one of Mr Amdan’s favourite places in the Lodge is the Central Garden where he immerses himself in the therapeutic effects of nature, feed fishes and pick fruits. Being a social butterfly, he often encourages his friends to visit the garden with him. As a multilingual, Mr Amdan extends his friendships to residents of different cultural and language backgrounds and he treasures the community and connections he has built in the Lodge.

Looking back, Mr Amdan’s life has transformed for the better since living in AHL. His aggression has reduced to 0 on the InterRai assessment tool, while his well-being has risen to 25 out of 28 points. Mr Amdan values his independence, fun and friendships, and we strive to allow fulfil these aspirations to allow him to maintain life in a respectful and dignified way.
