Embracing Life's Hues: Mdm Ng Kim Chuan's Journey of Resilience and Discovery
At 93 years old, Mdm Ng Kim Chuan joined Apex Harmony Lodge in January 2023, marking the beginning of a remarkable chapter of growth and discovery. In the initial days at the Lodge, Mdm Ng often yearned for the familiarity of her old home and the echoes of her past struggles occasionally resurfaced. However, time became a gentle healer, and those echoes gradually faded into a distant memory. Mdm Ng’s Depression Rating Scale (DRS) dropped to zero, a testament to her resilience and the nurturing environment that became her home.
Though challenged by a hearing impairment, Mdm Ng found immense joy in connecting with others through heartfelt conversations. Mdm Ng’s limited command of English did not deter her; rather, it opened doors to meaningful exchanges. She eagerly embraces the companionship of fellow residents and staff, even if she is not always the one to initiate conversations.
In the Lodge, Mdm Ng often demonstrates her love for lending a helping hand. From chores to creative pursuits, she embraces opportunities to contribute and enrich the lives of those around her.
Amidst her journey, a passion blossomed – Art. The Lodge’s Art Therapist recognised Mdm Ng’s creativity and eye for detail, and wanted to expand on her artistic expression. Therapeutic art activities such as Tangle Art, Brush of Life, and Artful Connection provided an opportunity for Mdm Ng to convey her thoughts and emotions in intricate patterns and strokes.
During her moments of respite, Mdm Ng enjoys being in her room or watching television in the living area. In addition, puzzle-solving and morning exercises keep her mind and body active. She also more recently picked up gardening and takes part in our culinary activities. Such programmes enliven her spirit and adds flavour to her days, literally.
As Mdm Ng reflects on her time in Apex Harmony Lodge, she is filled with gratitude. Every day is a fresh canvas for her, waiting to be painted with the vibrant hues of newfound passions and enriching experiences.
