Mdm Foong Hung Lui's journey is a testament to the transformative power of care and the resilience of the human spirit. Born in 1939, Mdm Foong spent her youth helping her parents run a fruit store, cherishing the simple joys of family and community. In 2017, life took an unexpected turn when Mdm Foong was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, a diagnosis that followed the passing of her beloved husband. Undeterred by these adversities, Mdm Foong pressed on, facing life's complexities with grace and determination.
Seeking connection and solace, Mdm Foong joined Apex Harmony Lodge (AHL)'s Daycare in 2019. Due to a fall, Mdm Foong required enhanced care, prompting her transition to AHL’s long-term residential care in 2022. Initially shy and reluctant to socialize, the dedicated care staff at AHL recognized her love for singing and Chinese culture. They introduced her to activities like Melodies United and Melodies of the Lodge, which unlocked a newfound joy within her. Over time, Mdm Foong flourished, actively participating in various activities, initiating conversations, and forming meaningful connections with fellow residents.
Acknowledging her past as a fruit store helper and housewife, the care staff engaged Mdm Foong in activities related to food preparation. From Harvest Punch to Joy-In-Dining (JID) cooking sessions, she discovered a renewed sense of purpose, cutting fruits, vegetables, and creating juices for her fellow residents. Overcoming challenges with the help of a child-safe knife, these activities became integral to her daily life.
Moreover, the transformation of Mdm Foong's eating habits was truly remarkable. Initially a picky eater, Mdm Foong's reluctance transformed into joy as she joined group dining sessions and participated in JID with the use of assistive devices – the Eat Well Set. Designed to enhance her dining experience, this innovative set empowered her to enjoy meals with confidence, fostering a healthier appetite.
More recently, Mdm Foong participated in a photoshoot alongside fellow residents, courtesy of our partner Dignity Kitchen's initiative aimed at bringing joy to seniors. This proved to be a very enjoyable experience for her, stepping in front of a camera and photographer. This was a new experience and she expressed immense happiness upon receiving her professionally captured photograph.
Grateful for the multitude of engaging activities at AHL, Mdm Foong continues to defy the limitations of dementia. Through her journey, she not only celebrates dementia as a unique phase of life but also offers a reminder of the importance of nurturing and enabled community. Not only does Mdm Foong finds empowerment in leading a meaningful life, but her involvement in AHL activities has also alleviated the stress and worries of her family.
